Gmail
Reads, answers and sorts your mail
- You make
- an app password (16 letters)
- Where
- https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords
- Command
kokuban connect gmail --account <you@gmail.com>
Steps
- If the page says app passwords are not available, turn on 2-Step Verification firstApp passwords are only offered with 2-Step Verification on. Some work accounts have them turned off by the administrator.
- Name it kokuban and create it
- Copy the 16 letters (spaces do not matter)
Then connect it
kokuban connect gmail --account <you@gmail.com>kokuban asks for the key (it is not shown as you paste it), keeps it in your OS keychain, and tries it at once. If the key cannot do something, it says what to change.
On kokuban's screen, the connections list shows the services not connected yet: open one and press y, and the screen hands the terminal to this command.
Good to know
- Give your address with --account. kokuban reads with IMAP and sends with SMTP, both from your computer.
- No app passwords on your account? Make your own Google app instead (a Desktop app in the Google Cloud console), download its client file, and run kokuban connect gmail --account you@gmail.com --google-client client_secret_….json. While that app is in testing, Google ends its sign-in after 7 days; sign in again then.
If it does not work
Make a new app password; if your organization blocks them, use your own Google app (--google-client, see the page)
kokuban connections checks every connection and says which ones need you.
Taking it back
Run kokuban disconnect gmail@hq, then delete the app password on the same page (myaccount.google.com/apppasswords).
